Slaven Bilic's training methods questioned as Reece Oxford "surprised" by Reading's intensity
Oxford has been off the pace at new club Reading

By Sam Inkersole

Reading boss Jaap Stam has criticised at West Ham's pre-match preparation, saying that loanee Reece Oxford has been surprised at the Royals’ training intensity.

Oxford signed with the Championship side on loan for six months on deadline day, but until this past weekend the 18-year-old talent had yet to appear for his new club.

That changed on Saturday when Oxford came on as a substitute in Reading’s 3-0 defeat away at Preston North End in the but the teenager only managed to get 18 minutes of action under his belt after replacing Paul McShane.

Stam’s comments about Oxford's lack of preparation appear be a thinly veiled dig at the regime at Rush Green, which is something that another Hammers loanee, Enner Valencia, has also hinted at.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Friday's game against Sheffield Wednesday, former Manchester United defender Stam said: "Reece Oxford has been surprised at the level of intensity in training at Reading, compared to at West Ham.

"Young players need to improve. You need to be on top of them and give them good advice, so that’s why training is intense."

Back in September, Valencia – who is on loan at Everton this season – also threw shade at Hammers training methods, saying: "I have enjoyed training with my new team-mates, it’s different to my last team - it is a little bit harder."

I would agree fitness at West Ham has looked well below par..

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
we concede a lot of late goals which is always a sign of weak fitness, Anyone got the stats on teams that have conceded the most in the last 10 mins?

There is also abelief that this high intensity can backfire. See the scouse. You need to set the right level.

I'll expand. My nephew is a high level fitness trainer for the olympics rowing team. Their primay objective is to be in perfect condition once every four years. The pain and punishment is so hard that only certain athletes can manage it. Translate this to footy players. Some can take it some cant. Doesnt make them worse players, just a bit less fit for a high intensity 98 minute game of footy.
Its possible we are inder prepared but I've not particularly seen evidence of that.

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Or it could be that Reece Oxford was going through the motions at West Ham and has had to pull his socks up to impress at Reading?

It could. Or he could have explained the methods?

usually you would tell him to mind his own............... but this is about the 3rd comment about training this season.

something is amiss.

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
It's a bit more 'talking up his own training' rather than 'criticising Bilic's'.

Difficult for us to say which is right and which is wrong.

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Yet another indication of our poor setup which has to change. Train like pub league players then you play like them. Its not surprising players form is sliding if you don't get it right.
It's clear as day on the pitch so the critical comments are more than likely accurate. No intensity and it shows.

One of Bilic's mates that has followed him from club to club and also the Croatian international side,is Miljenko Rak. He goes under the title Head of Performance and his wiki page says he's our fitness coach.
He will be 70 in September this year.

Wtf.

It isn't good for Bilic's reputation at a time he needs all the help he can get...

Is there?

Let's get it right. Do you honestly believe a mid-table EPL team would have fundamentally flawed training methods?

There may be elements that are not the same as other clubs and not have the same intensity. But to suggest there is a major problem based on what has been said is silly.

Especially when one of the people who made the suggestion is Valencia. He's a fucking muppet. And Stam has not directly criticised West Ham's methods has he? He's just said Oxford was surprised at the intensity.

maybe stam should get fucked and worry about his shitty team?

Lowestoft Hammer 12:48 Wed Mar 15
Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Brilliant reasoning Russ. Valencia's opinion doesn't count because he's a "fucking muppet".

Zaza mentioned it as well. Players were surprised at Arbeloa's level of intensity in training. A bloke called Slaven Bilic said the training lacked intensity as well.

Valencia, Staam, Zaza, Oxford, Arbeloa and Bilic are all "fucking muppets".

Us. As I pointed out, Liverpool's are as intense as you can get......
You can easily come off the rails or get injuries.

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Fuck Reading, we are a Premiership and not a tin pot EFL team who basically got told play Oxford or we will take him back, sounds like Stam having a little dig back. When they are a established Premier team then they have a right to moan. Until then they need to shut the fuck up
